The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC) was established in 2011. What are the specific objectives and activities of the coalition?
Smart Manufacturing is the application of real-time, networked and data-based Manufacturing Intelligence that facilitates demand dynamic markets, added product value, and high velocity technologies and products with increased expectations for environmental sustainability and zero incidents. Smart Manufacturing focuses on agile innovation and manufacture combined with radically increased productivity as engines for competitiveness and reinvestment, not simply for reduced cost. Smart Manufacturing also focuses agility, productivity, and energy and material management to produce opportunities that are beyond simply reducing market volatility. Smart Manufacturing marries these changes, the forces driving them, and new networked based information technologies and analyses to offer unprecedented insights.
The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC) is a non-profit, industry-led coalition comprising manufacturers, manufacturing consortia, universities, government laboratories and agencies, and regional consortia that are developing the Smart Manufacturing vision and are building the technical and business infrastructure that facilitates access and actionable enterprise application of real-time networked data and information applied throughout the manufacturing enterprise to achieve Smart Manufacturing.
SMLC’s vision is to unleash a new paradigm of seamless manufacturing execution to drive industrial competitiveness, through an open, real time manufacturing platform. SMLC will lead the industrial sector transformation into a networked, information-driven environment in which an open Smart Manufacturing Platform supports real-time, high value applications for manufacturers to optimize production systems and value chains, and radically improve sustainability, productivity, innovation and customer-service. In order to achieve this, SMLC will create, develop, support and evolve a cloud-based, open architecture manufacturing infrastructure and marketplace through the collaboration of manufacturing thought leaders across industry, academia, consortia and government that will:

- Facilitate superior real-time manufacturing performance

At CaFFEET’14, you will be speaking about “Implementing 21st Century Smart Manufacturing”. In few words, how does Real-Time Information improve enterprise performance?
Smart Manufacturing enables all information about the manufacturing process to be available when it is needed, where it is needed, and in the form that it is needed across entire manufacturing supply chains, complete product lifecycles, multiple industries, and small, medium and large enterprises. 21st Century Smart Manufacturing (SM) is manufacturing in which all information is available when it is needed, where it is needed, and in the form it is most useful to drive optimal actions and responses. The 21st Century SM enterprise is data driven, knowledge enabled, and model rich with visibility across the enterprise (internal and external) such that all operating actions are determined and executed proactively by applying the best information and a wide range of performance metrics. SM also encompasses the sophisticated practice of generating and applying data-driven Manufacturing Intelligence throughout the lifecycle of design, engineering, planning and production. Manufacturing intelligence is a deep, comprehensive behavioral understanding of the manufacturing process through data and modeling, which can create a new capacity to observe and take action on integrated patterns of operation through networked data, information, analytics, and metrics. SM applications use networked, information based technologies to integrate manufacturing intelligence in real-time throughout the enterprise and identify untapped opportunities to improve manufacturing performance.
SM draws its strength in applying manufacturing intelligence by taking a comprehensive approach to manufacturing. SMLC has identified a full range of new and untapped opportunities that are based on industry definitions such as: adaptable machines using benchmarking; information and innovation in an integrated supply chain; integrated dynamic energy management across multiple units; tracking and traceability; pin point product recalls; expanded innovation base; rapid in-production product qualification; agility with product transitions; simultaneous product and manufacture planning; one to many unit individual compartmentalized; and operational management of tradeoffs and risks.
In a broader way, how to make smart manufacturing accessible to any enterprise?
The SMLC believes achieving this mission requires establishment of a Smart Manufacturing (SM) Platform to enable cost-effective implementation of SM systems. As envisioned, the SM Platform is a shared, open-architecture infrastructure that integrates the basic components used by manufacturers to assemble customized orchestration and management systems, including methods for protection of intellectual property and security. The SM Platform infrastructure is designed for selection of technologies and to interface with both legacy and modernized systems, making it easy to extend or add capability to existing manufacturing operations at the level of need or readiness. It presents a radical change in traditional business models, now enabling companies of all types and sizes to gain easy, affordable, and timely access to an infrastructure and modeling, simulation and analytical technologies that can be tailored to meet cross-industry business-case, requirements and needs without having to retrofit existing systems.
This functionality can significantly reduce the risks and costs typically required to adopt new manufacturing technology and management solutions, and lower the barriers to contributing or commercializing new, innovative software applications used in manufacturing. Without a modern industrial infrastructure, adoption of SM Systems is not economically viable. Process control and automation systems implemented in piecemeal fashion will continue to limit innovation and capability. By making the SM Platform available to all potential users, SMLC intends to extend these benefits to small, medium, and large companies across the entire manufacturing value chain.
